petra

tuesday, june 27

today we left wadi rum after breakfast and headed to petra-- my first experience with one of the seven wonders of the world! and, boy was it a wonder! petra is huge, and i realized how little i knew about such an amazing place.

one of the first sites we saw was a tunnel that the nabataeans started building when they wanted to protect themselves from flash floods. this tunnel diverted water away from the siq into waadi al mudhim and to wadi al mataha. the water that was diverted through this tunnel was then used to supply water to the nymphaeum, the public fountain.

the siq is a natural sandstone gorge that winds towards the ancient city of petra.

this gorge leads you to the treasury- which we all know from indiana jones and the last crusader. as you walk through, there are two water channels that run along each side. these held clay pipes that carried fresh water to the city from the springs. the roads have been paved, but there is still a little of the original road show in some parts of the siq.

and, here's the treasury!

day one in petra was exhausting, but seeing the treasury made the sweat and blisters worth it!
